CHAPTER NINE
MATT WAS obviously faking sleep on the couch when Jessica entered the living room, two plates and two cups of coffee balanced on a silver tray. He had his arms crossed on his chest, his chin tipped forward and his feet propped on Sam’s priceless antique coffee table.
He looked huggably adorable. And sexy as a rumpled cop could look, which, as it turned out, was pretty darn sexy.
Jessica carefully went to her knees beside the table and slid the tray onto the surface before slipping a hand beneath the hem of Matt’s slacks and lightly tickling his calf. “Rise and shine, sleepyhead. Your delicious bedtime snack is here.” She grinned. “And it brought some eggs for you to eat, too.”
Matt opened one eye and sort of peered down to where most of her forearm now was hidden under his pant leg. “Gosh, Mrs. Robinson, are you trying to seduce me?”
She laughed. “I know that line—it’s from The Graduate. I bought it on DVD last year. But I think, if you want to be exact, it’s ‘Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me? Aren’t you?’”
Matt pushed himself up on the couch. “And are you, Mrs. Robinson?”
“Well, the way to a man’s heart is supposedly through his stomach,” Jessica said, unfolding a heavy cloth napkin and spreading it on his lap, “but that isn’t really where I’m aiming. Hungry?”
“I think so, yes,” he said, looking at the tray. “Smells good. What is it?”
“Eggs Benedict, you plebian,” Jessica said, picking up one of the plates. “It’s true, then, if it doesn’t come in a take-out box or have powdered sugar and sprinkles on it, cops don’t know nothin’ from breakfast.”
“Guilty as charged.” Matt took the plate from her and held it in front of him. “Looks pretty. What’s in it?”
Jessica rolled her eyes. “You mean it, don’t you? You’ve never eaten eggs Benedict. All right. Eggs Benedict, Lieutenant, consists of eggs, Hollandaise sauce, and Canadian bacon, served on a lovely toasted English muffin. Mine are better than most, the secret being the addition of a crucial smidgeon of Worcestershire sauce many leave out. Take a taste.”
Matt did as she said, and smiled around a mouthful as he chewed and swallowed. “You made this? You? All by yourself?”
“I also can walk and chew gum at the same time. Yes, all by myself. I’m a great cook, a real catch. Now some coffee.”
“Why? You put Worcestershire sauce in that, too?”
“I’ll ignore that crack. No, I use one hundred percent Arabica beans. Most coffees are either robusta beans or a combination of Arabica and robusta, but one hundred percent Arabica is the best. I carry my own beans with me when I travel. And the cutest little hand grinder Jade gave me for Christmas a few years ago.”
Matt picked up the coffee cup and took a sip. “Okay. That’s pretty damn good. I’m impressed, which means something, because cops know their coffee. What else can you do?”
Jessica grinned. “Ask me later, once you’re done eating and we go upstairs.
